I am delighted to join with the Russian Community and, in particular, with the Russian Ethnic Community Council of New South Wales, in opposing the changes to the Russian language studies course of the New South Wales Higher School Certificate.
Unless HSC Russian language studies are retained in the 2 Unit Z, 2 Unit and 3 Unit format, it is clear that many school students – including the children and grandchildren of Russian migrants – may never seek to learn the language at all.
As a qualified school teacher myself, I can say with every confidence that replacing these subjects with the one Background Speakers course will be extremely demanding and will only be suitable for students who have completed or almost completed their secondary education in Russian.
I place on the public record my total support for the Russian Community in your endeavours to lobby the NSW Government to reverse its retrograde decision on Russian language studies.
