I am pleased to join with fellow members of the Russian Community – and especially with my fellow members of the Russian Ethnic Community Council of New South Wales – in supporting Russian language studies for the New South Wales Higher School Certificate.
The abolition of Russian 2 Unit Z, 2 Unit and 3 Unit studies – and their replacement by a single background speakers course – as promulgated by the New South Wales State Government, are not only a retrograde scholastic step, but a major blow to the Russian Community.
Russian language and culture face extinction here in New South Wales because – as a direct result of these amendments – fewer local students will be encouraged to take on Russian studies for the HSC.
Accordingly, I publicly call on the Carr Government to reverse its decision, in the interests of retaining the Russian language for future generations of Australians of Russian background – for our children and grandchildren.
